In January 2026 a user under the handle captain0bunny reported on X that about $40,000 in USDG stablecoins had been frozen across four OKX accounts, admitting in the same thread that the accounts had been bought from third parties at the end of 2023 and verified under other people's names; the freeze was triggered when the facial recognition system demanded confirmation and the identity did not match. As Cointelegraph reported on 12 January 2026, the exchange's founder Star Xu publicly refused to lift the freeze, calling the transfer of control over an account a breach of asset security obligations, and listed three conditions for a review: the original KYC owners waive their rights to the funds, there are no court-ordered blocks on the accounts, and the origin of the money is confirmed. The takeaway for users: bought and "borrowed" accounts are a guaranteed loss of access to funds.
